Preparing for the Year of Jubilee 2000

FYI - Great Start

It was good to see so many of you at Orientation and to have the chance to visit with so many of you the first week of school. Everything is off to a great start. Children and staff are adjusting to each other, to being on that 'school day schedule' with the early mornings and precious little free time. But, your children look wonderful and most seem happy to be back at school. We are still working with adjusting schedules and fine tuning accommodations for space needs - always a challenge.

You should have already received several important documents: The official calendar, the staff list, the service hour packet, and the voice mail listings for the staff, and the newly revised Parent - Student Handbook. Please let us know if you did not receive these items.

Reminders:
School begins at 8:00 AM. Children should be in classrooms before the 8:00 AM bell.
Parking at dismissal time in the church parking lot is limited to the designated parking spaces. There is no parking along any of the curbs - a safety hazard for our children!

Many Thanks to All of You

Only with the help of some very special people were we able to realize some of our goals for this past summer.

Sandra Diaz Frances, Darlene Garcia, Debbie Skerhut, and Mr. & Mrs. Cameron sanded and painted desks in the kindergarten.
Joann Sanchez, Christina Stancombe, and the SHARE group helped clean the Gym walls.
Leo Sanchez and SHARE group members helped tape the Gym floor for repainting.
Myriam Rodriguez helped paint the Gym floor.
David & Sally Nordman donated fabric for recovering the soundboards in the Gym and also joined P.J. & Carol Fleming and members of the SHARE group in doing the work.
Jeff Lavender removed the carpet from the stage in the Gym and replaced it with tile.
Paul Bishop had a wall installed in the office for Kathy Restivo who now has a door.
Vernon Grams & Bill Sexton helped take care of the summer repairs.
Chris Uptmore painted the backboards on the basketball courts.
Joe Ruiz & Larry Brisiel washed the outside windows of the school; and we can see again!
John Brotherman, Larry Brisiel, Joe Ruiz and other volunteers have continued to make great progress in meeting the school's automation goals (full report on next page).
Gary Dienart spent some of his summer vacation cleaning and organizing the teacher workroom.
Rachel Grohman, Office Manger; Susan Burrier, Bookkeeper; and Kathy Restivo, Asst Principal all spent a lot of their own time at school this summer preparing for a smooth opening day of school.
Paul Bishop moved the playground gravel piles onto the playground and Steve Kurtz spread the gravel under the new play structure.

Would you like to join or assist us in accomplishing our 1999-2000 goals? Please attend the next AUTOCOM meeting on Monday, August 23 at 6:00 PM-8:00 PM in the Monsignor Martin Family Center of call Larry Brisiel at 472-6720, ext 237 or 490-2027 after 6:00 PM for more details.

Congratulations to all those families who sold $50 of Parish Festival Raffle Tickets and earned No Uniform coupons for the children. If you did not get your tickets sold, there is still one more opportunity; be sure to have money and stubs in by August 20.

All Groups Wanting to Use the Family Center

Janet Weinhold, St. Pius Business Manager, requires all individuals or groups who want chairs or tables set up for functions in the Family Center must secure volunteers to do this. The same is true for clean up. Effective 8/19/98.

The Extended Day Program at St. Pius is an extension of the school day and all rules, policies, and procedures for the school day, as outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook, also apply in extended Day.

Extended day will provide some playtime as well as homework time and snack time. Children are expected to follow the rules in Extended Day, to cooperate with staff, and follow directions. Failure to comply may result in suspension from the Extended Day program.

Principal Notes

Dear Parents:

You will note that the 1999 Parent Student Handbook has been extensively expanded to include policies of the Archdiocese as requested by the Superintendent of Catholic Schools. All families must submit a new handbook agreement form indicating that you have read the new handbook. Thank you for your cooperation in getting this done in a timely manner.

Please don't forget that we need those two emergency cards per child today!

Please remember that change is hard even when it is a good change. Give your child a lot of support as he/she adjusts to a new teacher, classmates, schedules, academic expectations, etc., and encourage a lot of patience (time heals many anxieties) and prayer. Please also give the new teachers and staff members your support and understanding, We are, after all, first and foremost a faith community!!
